Summer Greetings from the MAEA President

Hi MAEA Members,

I hope you are getting the summer break you all deserve. There are some of you who are teaching summer classes and inspiring all those young minds. I know many of you are taking workshops and classes to recharge your artistic selves. I am diligently working for MAEA to keep you posted.

Just a few updates and reminders about our awesome organization:  President elect Vicki Bean and I will be attending the NAEA Leadership Session and the Western Region Meeting being held June 24-28 th in Grand Rapids. This meeting will include reporting out about out MAEA. Vicki and I will pull up the AWARD winning website and brag about our great association.  Each state is to report on the top three accomplishments of the members and MAEA. This will be hard to do for MAEA as we have much to be proud of.  So I will mention; 1. our web site, 2. our TWO conferences 3. artbytes.

As I had mentioned, the MAEA website www.maea.net is one of only two NATIONAL award winning websites. Ann Kynion who is our webmisterss has done a fantastic job keeping the website up and running.  She has made the site easy to use and navigate. There are many links and down loadable pages to keep our members informed and up to date.

Vicki Willett has compiled the member resource list that can be viewed at  www.maea.net under links, or http://freewebs.comtwillett/index.htm  If you need someone to do a specialty workshop you can just look them up by category or locale.  It is a great assett to have for our members.  Thanks again to Terri for her hard work to get this all together.

The MAEA council will be meeting in Kancas City, Aug. 1st at the Kemper Museum. We are going to be going over the  plans for Fall and Spring conferences. The Fall Conference is going to be Oct. 9-10 at the Knob Noster State park at camp Bob White. This conference is well known for its many hands on workshops and the Drag and Brag. The Friday night entertainment is going to be a group mural organized by Carrie Fiendstaff. Hope you can make it.

The Spring conference is going to be at the Sheritan Sports Complex in Kansas City, on March 4-6, 2010. The pre-conference will be held at the Nelson/ in conjunction with the Kemper. This is also a “First Friday” weekend and there will be great art events in the Crossroads district. There is sure to be something for everyone. Make plans to be there.

If you hav not signed up for artbytes you are missing out on a fantastic resource for MO art teachers. MAEAArtBytes is a listserve designed to keep Missouri art teachers in touch with what is going on in the state organization as well as information from across the state.   If you would like to receive emails from ArtBytes,  please enter your email address on the bottom of the  www.maea.net  website.

Both the MAEA website and artbytes are a great way to keep informed about what is going on in our profession. Thanks again for being a part of this great professional organization. Thanks again to all the council for making this organization run smoothly. Thanks to all the members for making it one of the largest art teacher assocations in the Nation.

Spring 2009 Prez Report

Hi MAEA members,

We are about to publish the second of Show Me Arts edition with the fabulous new format. Rick Peterson and Tina Hyde, our co editors do a great job putting together an informative and professional magazine for our MAEA members.  Anyone who would like to contribute to the magazine you can submit articles or pictures to rpeterson@mail.nixa.k12.mo.us.net or hyde_tin@mr1.k12.mo.us.

MAEA’s two state conferences are excellent ways for art teachers from all over Missouri to get amazing professional development opportunities. As one of the National Art Education Associations Western Region Delegates, I can be sure MAEA is unique in the fact we have two yearly conferences. Much effort and time goes into the planning of these conferences. MAEA council members put in many volunteer hours to organize these two amazing professional development opportunities for there members.

MAEA has the fall conference in the first or second weekend in October at Knob Noster State Park. This conference offers a rustic experience with sleeping cabins and beautiful campgrounds. The fall conference has come and go workshops and hands on workshops that provide a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Friday nights Drag & Brag is always much anticipated, with lesson plans and lots of amazing student examples. There is evening entertainment with a DJ, dancing, and painting advocacy banners. This year, Carrie Fiendstaff is going to have a huge canvas mural that needs painting, come and join the fun. Please make plans to attend the upcoming fall conference Oct. 9-10.

We have already started making plans for the conference. Members who would like to present can fill out an online proposal form found on our website. www.mata.net  Presenters receive $25 off registration and up to $50 reimbursement in consumable supplies with receipts. Volunteers are always needed for help with the conferences. Look for the on line volunteer sign-up sheet closer to each conference time. Volunteers get a bonus lesson plan cd for signing up to help.

MAEA student/first year members attend the fall conference for free. And the spring conference for the same price the retired members. The students are now able to stay connect and informed on Facebook and a new blog at www.maeastudentblogspot.com., thanks to Danielle Senckel, the student /first year representative.

All members can keep connected by going to our website, www.maeaa.net  maintained by Ann Kynion, and by joining Artbytes, moderated by Kim Foster. MAEA is making efforts to “go green” by doing our communications on line. There are many links and printable forms available on line as well. MAEA has also stopped printing the lesson plans for the conferences and gone to putting the lesson plans on cds. This is also a “green” way to save a huge printing expense.

April 6th I was informed that MAEA received an Honorable Mention Website Award from NAEA. Ann Kynion is our webmistress and she should be proud of her accomplishment. Friday April 16th MAEA will be presented this award at the National convention. I am very proud of all of MAEA talented teachers. Congratulations again to all the award winners

The spring conference was held March 26-28th at Tan Tar A resort.

We had 460 members attend, over 54 of those being MAEA student members and 15 first year teachers. There were 130 workshops offering everything from using technology in the art room to hands on printmaking. These workshops are presented by our own MAEA members who volunteer to share ideas and expertise. Vicki Bean, president elect and Rebecca Moppin, scheduling guru, did a great job with the conference. Michelle Mills did a fantastic job with the on site coordination and the head centerpieces. Janice Januzzi Thomas, as always is the most gracious vender liaison. Thanks to all the council members who pitched in and make this conference run so smoothly.

Friday’s luncheon had the Fundred Dollar Bill Project presented by Holley Smothers. The project was conceived by Mel Chin and is to raise awareness for the devastation by Katrina and the lead found in the soil. This is a Nation wide lesson plan that is presented for children to design fundred dollar bills to bring awareness to this terrible problem.

MAEAs own Judy Domeny Bowen, art teacher and entertainer extraordinaire sang and spoke to our hearts. Judy sang some of our favorites including, Mrs. Shepard’s Car.  She spoke about finding fun and joy in teaching. Judy is an inspiration to all of us with her sweet spirit and grace.

Saturday at the awards ceremony we honored our outstanding members as well as supporters of the arts. The Otto Bean Jr. Arts Advocacy Award was presented to Sen. David Pearce and Rep. Sarah Lampe for there continued supports of the Arts Caucus. MAEA award winners are: elementary teacher: Cyndi Shepard; Secondary: Linda Griffen; higher education: Dr. Mick Lehurmann, museum education: Jennifer Zeller, MAEA art educator of the year Leesha Dunkeson, and a MAEA special service award went to Linda Bowers who is our membership chair and registration chair. There were two member show winners this year; were Dr. Kathy Unrath and Dr. Belinda Smith. Congratulations to all of you, you deserve it.

Next year the spring conference will be held March 4-6th, 2011 in Kansas City, at the Sheridan Spots Complex. We are in the works of plans for the pre conference event with the Kansas City museums. This conference will fall on the first Friday and will offer gallery events in the Crossroads District. This should be another great professional development opportunity provided by MAEA for art teachers in Missouri.

MAEA is ranked as one of the top 5 professional art education associations in the Nation with over 900 members. We offer two conferences a year that are top quality professional development opportunities. I want to thank all the council members and volunteers for the hard work and dedication they put forth for MAEA. I also want to thank the members.  You make MAEA a strong organization for art teachers. You are the ones who are dedicated to teaching and inspiring students to learn and create.

Respectfully submitted,
